  • A wellness spa in Kentucky saw “organic” traffic coming from California and New Jersey.

These visitors weren’t local. They weren’t booking. They weren’t real leads.


Why It’s a Problem (and Not a Shortcut)

Here’s why this tactic is dangerous:

  • It’s like buying Instagram followers. You inflate your numbers, but they mean nothing, and your real audience doesn’t grow.
  • It skews your analytics. You lose visibility into what’s actually working. Real local visitors get lost in the noise.
  • It sends the wrong signals to Google. Search engines are smart. If your site shows high traffic but no conversions, irrelevant geographic interest, and unnatural session behavior, it can hurt your rankings.

  • Optimize for your service area and audience
  • Build content based on real search intent
  • Set up Google Business Profile and collect reviews
  • Use Google Search Console and GA4 to measure real user behavior
  • Improve your site speed, keyword usage, and internal linking
  • Run Google Ads if you want immediate, qualified traffic, not fake traffic dressed up as “organic”
