Let's look at a higher-end online services client who has been consistent with her SEO since 2020. I'm showing you exactly what 6 years of consistent, foundational SEO work looks like in real organic traffic numbers — including a dip from a recent Google core update and why we didn't panic.
What I cover in this episode:
I recommend watching the video first, then reviewing the information below. I'll walk you through the data, what I'm seeing, and what it means. You can then use these examples to look at your own Google Analytics data and better understand what's happening with your website traffic.
This week I'm looking at one client, one channel, and 6 years of data. Organic search only — meaning people finding this business through Google and other search engines with zero paid ads involved. This is a higher-end online services business. Very consistent with both her SEO and her Google Ads. Minimal social media presence. And she has been a client of mine since 2020.
I'm going to show you what 6 years of consistent SEO work actually looks like in real numbers because I think it tells a story that a lot of people in this space are not telling you.
Let's start with where we are today and work backwards. April 2026: 1,576 organic sessions. Now let me show you where we started. April 2020: 73 sessions. That is the same month, 6 years apart, on the same website, in the same business. 73 sessions to 1,576 sessions. That is not a coincidence and it is not luck. That is 6 years of consistent work showing up in the data.
Here's what that growth looked like year by year in April:
Look at that trendline on the chart. It goes up. Not perfectly — there are dips and flat stretches along the way — but the direction over 6 years is unmistakably up.
So what did we actually do? Because I want to be specific here. This is not a case of doing hundreds of things or spending thousands of dollars every month. The work has been consistent and focused.
First, we got her website basics right. Mobile friendly, fast loading, optimized images. Content that actually answers the questions her potential clients are searching for. Title tags and meta descriptions built around the right key phrases. Every service page has its own page — not everything crammed onto one page. These are the fundamentals and they matter more than anything else.
Second, we work on her blog content consistently. Not publishing 20 posts a month — optimizing what exists, adding new posts that target specific key phrases, making sure the content is actually useful and not just filler. Every year we go back and look at what's working and improve it.
Third, she shows up. She doesn't start and stop. She doesn't decide SEO isn't working because one month is slow. She trusts the process and the data, and that consistency is honestly her biggest competitive advantage. A lot of her competitors are not doing this. Period.
Now I want to talk about something that shows up in this data because it's important. If you look at the chart you'll see a dip going into early 2026 before April's number. We had a couple of Google core updates that we believe caught this client — wrongly. Nothing is broken on her site. Her content is solid. Her basics are all in place. This is Google doing what Google does sometimes, and it affects good sites as often as it affects bad ones.
Here's what we did not do: we did not panic. We did not start changing everything at once. We did not chase whatever the latest SEO trend was saying to do. We stayed the course, kept doing the work, and we are watching the numbers recover. Because that is what happens when your foundation is solid. You weather the updates and come out the other side. A business that had been cutting corners or doing things the wrong way doesn't recover as cleanly.
I want you to sit with the April 2020 number for a second. 73 sessions. If this client had looked at 73 sessions and decided SEO wasn't worth it, we would not be sitting here looking at 1,576 sessions 6 years later. I see businesses quit all the time when they're 6 months in and the numbers feel small. But small and growing is not the same as not working. SEO is a long game. It is a never-ending marathon. If you never get started you are never going to get anywhere. And if you start and stop every time it feels slow, you're restarting the clock every single time.
Consistency is the strategy. Not a complicated one. Not an expensive one. Consistent, focused work on the right things over time. That's what this data is showing you.

Two things to do this week. First, if you are not doing SEO yet, start. Even one hour a month on the right things is better than nothing.
Second, if you are doing SEO, pull your organic sessions and look at them year over year going back as far as your data goes. Not month to month — year over year. That's the view that tells you whether the work is paying off. Month to month will make you crazy. Year over year tells you the truth.
