Why AI Isn’t Your Traffic Strategy (And What Actually Is) - The Visibility Method

Why AI Isn’t Your Traffic Strategy (And What Actually Is)

There’s a pattern I keep seeing right now, and honestly, it’s not surprising.

Everyone wants to know how to get recommended by AI.

How to show up in ChatGPT.
How to get AI to send traffic.
How to “optimize for AI.”

But here’s what I’m seeing in actual client data.

ai isn't your traffic strategy

What the Data Actually Shows

I recently pulled year to date numbers across 32 client accounts.

I looked at three things:

  • Total sessions
  • Sessions from Google Organic (only counted Google even though they all had other organic sessions)
  • Sessions from ChatGPT (AI that is sending the most traffic across the board)

Here’s what stood out:

  • Every single client was getting traffic from Google organic
  • Not every client was getting traffic from ChatGPT
  • The only clients getting more than 1% of their traffic from ChatGPT were already getting 40% or more of their traffic from Google

Let that sink in.

AI is not the starting point.
It’s the byproduct.

The clients doing “well” with AI visibility are the same ones who already built strong SEO foundations.

You Can’t Skip the Foundation

This is the part a lot of people don’t want to hear.

You cannot decorate a house before you build it.

First, you need the foundation.
Then you need some walls.
Next, you need a framework.
And so on.

Your website works the same way.

Your site is not going to bring in consistent organic traffic until the basics are done.

And when I say basics, I mean:

  • Proper title tags with real search terms (not “Home”)
  • Meta descriptions that actually get clicks
  • A submitted sitemap
  • Pages built around specific services or topics
  • Clear structure and navigation
  • Content that matches what people are actually searching for
  • Images optimized for speed and usability

I know people hear this and think, “That’s it?”

No.

But you would be surprised how far that alone will take you.

Most businesses do not need advanced SEO.

They need to actually do the basics consistently.

The Problem with Skipping Ahead

Instead of doing that, a lot of business owners are jumping straight to advanced tactics.

Or worse, shortcuts.

Things like:

  • Buying backlinks
  • Using link farms
  • Let AI dictate their content, their keywords, etc.
  • Trying to “game” the system

That doesn’t work long term.

In many cases, it will hurt your site more than help it.

What actually moves the needle is:

  • The content on your site
  • How fast your site loads
  • How easy it is to navigate
  • Whether someone can quickly take the next step

That next step might be:

  • Booking an appointment
  • Filling out a form
  • Calling you
  • Requesting a quote

If your site doesn’t support that, traffic doesn’t matter anyway.

Let’s Talk About AI for a Minute

AI is powerful. No question.

It can:

  • Help you organize ideas
  • Speed up content creation
  • Analyze data quickly

But there’s something people keep forgetting.

AI is not always right.

I tested this recently. I asked for fitness trackers with a very specific feature.

It gave me three options.

When I went directly to the manufacturers’ websites, none of them had that feature.

Every single one was wrong.

Now imagine making business decisions based on that.

I’m seeing people say, “AI told me to target these keywords,” even when those keywords don’t make sense for their business.

That’s a problem.

AI can assist you, but it should not replace your judgment or your strategy.

What Actually Works

If you want more visibility, more traffic, and yes, even more AI recommendations, here’s where to focus:

  • Build a solid website foundation
  • Optimize your pages for real search behavior
  • Create content that answers actual questions
  • Make your site fast and easy to use
  • Give it time to work

Because SEO is not instant.

It can take months to really gain traction.

But once it does, it compounds.

And here’s the part people overlook.

When you optimize for Google, you are not just optimizing for Google.

You are also improving your visibility across:

  • Bing
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Yahoo
  • And yes, AI tools

That’s exactly what I saw in my client data.

The Bottom Line

AI is not the strategy.

It’s the outcome.

If you skip the basics, you will struggle, no matter how many AI tools you use.

If you build the foundation first, everything else gets easier, including AI visibility.

So before you ask how to get recommended by AI, ask yourself:

Have I actually done the basics well?

Because that’s where this starts.
